The Reluctant Disciple – Chapter 1

This first chapter of the book sets the tone for all of us.  He starts with the call of the disciples who immediately drop what they are doing and follow Him.  It sounds pretty simple but we all know that we are only getting part of the picture.  The disciples...

The Reluctant Disciple – Chapter 2

BE ALERT---STAY AWAKE!!  This is what we hear in Mark's gospel.  Yet all of us fall into the trap of having life simply pass us by.  Sometimes we can fall into routine going through life and maybe at times simply trying to survive.  Some of us get so busy that we...

The Reluctant Disciple – Chapter 3

This chapter made me think about the Muppets!!  Remember the two old men who were in the balcony who always complained and criticized the performances?  I really liked them a lot!!  It is so much easier for us to be cynical, negative and caught up in our own lives and...

The Reluctant Disciple – Chapter 4

We often define our lives by comparing ourselves to others.  This starts at a very young age and develops into bigger things over time.  We need to be valued and appreciated, given recognition and be better than others.  Yet this way of life can leave us quite empty...

The Reluctant Disciple – Chapter 5

The Reluctant Disciple – Chapter 7

The Reluctant Disciple – Chapter 8

The sound of silence can be so powerful.  In this chapter David shares with us the wisdom of silence which is a wonderful way to lay down our weapons to create opportunities of love, kindness and compassion.  He uses the scripture passage of Jesus and Pilate from the...

The Reluctant Disciple – Chapter 9

Being nervous is a good thing. We like to avoid times of nervousness but in reality it helps us focus and it tells us what we are about to do is super important. I always get a little nervous before preaching, celebrating Mass and even refereeing basketball. I want to...

The Reluctant Disciple – Chapter 10

It is wonderful when we have epiphany moments in our lives.  Sometimes these great moments of wisdom or grace occur in good times but they often happen in moments of trouble, struggle or challenge.  Regardless of the circumstances, we need to embrace the pearls or...

The Reluctant Disciple – Chapter 11

The practical realities of our lives are great teachers!!  Our family, friends and workplace are opportunities to grow as a faithful disciple and to discover we have so much to learn.  I guess that is one of the major reasons why we at the parish have a book club.  By...

The Reluctant Disciple – Chapter 12

How can traffic jams on our way to work help us let things go??  That's the last thing I would think would help us on our way to being a wonderful and faithful disciple of Jesus.  Yet David shares his experience of being in a traffic challenge with honking horns and...
